Early Childhood Program (2½ - 6+ years)

MACTE Accredited Online and In-Person Montessori Teacher Program

Montessori Early Childhood Teacher-Guide Education Course (2½ to 6 years)

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that at the early childhood, the motto should be: “Help me to do it by myself!” Learning to apply this fundamental principle is an essential component of the education course. Instructors are dedicated to explaining the theoretical framework for understanding young child development and demonstrating the use of developmentally appropriate materials.

The MACTE accredited Early Childhood Montessori Diploma covers the following topics: the philosophical, scientific, and historical foundations of Montessori's educational approach and its modernity; stages of childhood growth and holistic development; motor development and mastery of movement through daily life activities, music, rhythm, and movement; sensorial foundations of intellectual life; acquisition of spoken and graphic language; early awareness and preparation of the mathematical mind; presentation of scientific and cultural subjects; environmental design in the Montessori prepared environment; and parent education and classroom management.

  • Our mission

Our mission is to provide children with the best possible educators: individuals who respect the child and can support each child's needs. Teacher candidates will explore the necessary tools to foster the child's growth and development while providing "hands-on" experience that will encourage the child to develop a lifelong love and enthusiasm for discovery and learning.

Our vision calls upon us to prepare leaders who affirm and promote the essential goodness, dignity and freedom of all human beings. The goal of this Early Childhood Montessori Education Program is to provide teacher candidates with a thorough understanding of ''The Secret of Childhood'', to help them gain insights into the true nature of child development, to model the use of developmentally appropriate Montessori materials, and to demonstrate how respect for the child's "inner teacher" serves as the integrating principle for effective early childhood education.

Dr. Daniel Jutras is the Institute's Director who, for the last 30 years, has prepared over 2400 Montessori teachersand educators, and tutored Montessori Courses and Workshops in Toronto, Winnipeg, Québec City, USA, England, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Poland and Vietnam. Daniel has a Ph.D. in Education from Ottawa U., an AMI diploma (3-6+) from Perugia, Italy; his Instructor and mentor was the late Antonietta Paolini who worked with Dr. Maria Montessori for 22 years, and a St.Nicholas Montessori Advanced diploma (6-12) from England.

"The teacher-guide's mission has for its aim something constant and exact, bearing in mind the words of Maria Montessori: "He must grow while I diminish.""

  • Aims of the course

To provide teacher-candidates with opportunities and resources to gain the necessary knowledge and practical experience to pursue a career as educated qualified Early Childhood Montessori educators. The need for well-trained Montessori teachers and educators continues to grow all over the planet. To be convinced is to consult ads on the Internet, local newspapers or magazines about worldwide Montessori careers.

    Our aims are to:

    • Keep Montessori philosophy and respect for children central to its purpose
    • Provide the teacher-candidates with knowledge and practical skills that are relevant to the needs of the child
    • Provide high quality education for future Montessori teachers, as per the MACTE standards
  • Outcomes

Through the Early Childhood Montessori Education course, teacher-candidates will:

    • Understand the fundamentals of Montessori's philosophy
    • Become proficient and confident in the use of Montessori learning materials
    • Reflect the Montessori ideas of Childhood development (ages 2½ - 6+)
    • Be able to "follow the child" and implement the Montessori approach
    • Be competent with classroom management
  • Course level

The Early Childhood Montessori Education Course prepares the adult to accompany and guide young children from ages 2½ - 6+ years of age in a Montessori environment.

  • The course is designed for

    • Individuals who are pursuing the field of Montessori Education with children between 2½ - 6+ years of age
    • Pre-school, E.C.E., Kindergarten and Primary teachers who wish to be familiarized with the Montessori Approach to Early Childhood Education
    • Teachers who would like to join an existing Montessori school
    • Teachers who would like to know the use of concrete Montessori materials for remedial work in graphic language and in mathematics
    • Special Education teachers who need manipulative and concrete materials to encourage development of neuromuscular skills leading to abstract ideas
    • For people who simply love children and care about their whole development

Great teaching is more than preparing an appropriate environment for learning and discovery, or presenting course material in order. Rather, it is to know what materials are appropriate for the child, as well as it's needs when exploring their next steps. Montessori teachers are prepared to "follow the child" and are acutely aware of each child's interests and accomplishments.

  • Internship and teaching practice

Practical application in an approved Montessori learning environment, under the guidance of an experienced Montessori certified teacher, is required during this course.

This integral part of the Education course consists of an internship of 400 hours, 120 of which will be supervised teaching practice where the teacher-candidate observes, assists and participates to the dynamic process of education of the host Montessori school. The remaining 280 hours will constitute of independent study, projects, material making and research.
